Congress of European Hematologists: Research Exchange fellowships send two outstanding young European scientists to the US
Two young hematologists have been selected as this year’s recipients of joint American Society of Hematology – European Hematology Association Research Exchange fellowships. The intention of the fellowships is to give exceptional researchers additional opportunities to develop their expertise and establish international networks by working outside their home countries. This year’s recipients are Dr Freda-Janet Passam from the University Hospital of Crete, Greece and Dr Carmen Schweighofer from the University Hospital of Cologne, Department of Internal Medicine in Germany.
Berlin, June 5, 2009 – This year’s EHA-ASH Research Exchange fellowships have been awarded to Dr Freda-Janet Passam from Greece and Dr Carmen Schweighofer from Germany. Each recipient is granted $ 75,000 for a maximum of a two years period and a minimum of 10 months to fund their research at an institution of their choice. The fellowships are endowed to strengthen international collaboration among scientists. The award is open to residents of North America and Europe. Additional funding is available for recipients to attend the annual meetings of the EHA and the ASH.

| Dr Freda-Janet Passam will work at the Division of Hemostasis and Thrombosis, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard Medical School with Professor Bruce Furie. Her research will focus on the “Role of the thiol isomerase ERp5 in thrombosis formation”. | Dr Carmen Schweighofer, who will be present at the press briefing, will work at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Department of Hematopathology in Houston, with Dr Lynne Abruzzo and Dr Michael Keating. Her research subject is: “Genomic aberrations predict outcome in patients with CLL treated with frontline FCR chemoimmunotherapy”. |
