How would you treat a 63-year-old male with 3-month history of bone pain, together with high ESR and anemia found prior to his admission to hospital?

Past medical history: type-II insulin-dependent diabetes (diagnosed 6 years before).

On examination:

No relevant findings

At this time he was referred to the hospital, to the Hematology Service.
Blood count:

WBC 5.6 x 109/L
Hb 9.9 g/dL
Platelet count 267 x 109/L

Biochemical tests and ESR:

ESR very high
IgG: 19.5 g/L
IgA: 0.53 g/L
IgM: 0.1 g/L
Kappa/lambda: 29/0.65
Urea and creatinine within the normal range
C-reactive protein: 0.6 mg/dL
b2-microglobulin: 2.1 mg/dL
BJ proteinuria: positive.
