Fellowships program 2007

The aim of the program is to promote European hematological research and in particular to support junior basic and clinical researchers in the development of their careers.

The Fellowships Program 2007 includes a number of EHA Research Fellowships as well as the long established EHA - José Carreras Foundation Young Investigator Fellowship. Each grant in the 2007 program is for a two-year period. Awards will be made at the 12th Annual Congress of EHA in Vienna, June 7-10, 2007 and will be payable from January 2008.

ELIGIBILITY

Research fellowships are specially intended to support investigators early in their career. Applicants should be within 15 years of graduation or have less than 10 years post-doc experience. Applicants must be members of EHA from at least one month before submitting their application. The EHA Fellowships Program is also open for members from non-European countries.

SUBMISSION

EHA - JOSÉ CARRERAS FOUNDATION YOUNG INVESTIGATOR FELLOWSHIP

EHA - José Carreras Foundation Young Investigator Fellowship Program provides seed funds to promising junior investigators to encourage and promote quality research in hematology. The fellowship is sponsored through the EHA via unrestricted educational grants from the three European José Carreras Foundations: José Carreras International Leukemia Foundation, Fondation José Carreras pour la lutte contre la leucèmie, Genève and Deutsche José Carreras Leukämie Stiftung e.V.

FUNDING

  • The grant is for a two-year period, starting January 1, 2008.
  • The recipient will receive a total of EUR 84.000 which will be provided in two annual portions of EUR 42.000 to be transferred to the host institution.
  • From the total grant of 42.000 per year, EUR 3.000 per year is paid to the institution for institutional overheads to help defray the costs of administering the project.
  • The remainder of the grant (39.000 per year) is designed to mainly cover salary expenses up to a maximum of EUR 30.000 per year, including fringe benefits; a maximum of EUR 9.000 per year can be used for expenses (e.g. consumables, travel, equipment) necessary for pursuit of the research project.

EHA RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS

The EHA Research Fellowships are aimed at promoting hematological research and target junior basic and clinical researchers both in the fields of malignant and non-malignant hematology. The Research Fellowships are fully sponsored by the European Hematology Association and designed to mainly support salary and other expenses e.g. supplies, equipment and travel necessary for the pursuit of the recipient’s research project.

FUNDING

  • Each grant is for a two-year period, starting in January 1, 2008
  • The recipient will receive a total of EUR 72.000 which will be provided in two annual portions of EUR 36.000 to be transferred to the host institution.
  • The grant is designed to mainly cover salary expenses up to a maximum of EUR 27.000 per year, including fringe benefits; a maximum of EUR 9.000 per year can be used for expenses (e.g. consumables, travel, equipment) necessary for pursuit of the research project.

GUIDELINES FOR APPLICATIONS EHA FELLOWSHIPS

  • Applicants must be an MD or PhD
  • Applicants must be a member of EHA from at least one month before application
  • Applicants must be in training in a hematology sub-specialty or in a post-graduate hematology training program at the time of application
  • Applicants should be within 15 years of graduation or have less than 10 years post-doc experience.
  • Applicants should be working in a research laboratory or clinical department
  • The sponsoring facility must be an academic institution; an institutional commitment at time of submission of the grant is required
  • The primary preceptor must be in the candidate's proposed research field and must assume responsibility and provide guidance for the research
  • Institutions can only apply for one grant.

REPORTING

  • An interim report highlighting the project’s progress and summarizing the use of the funds in the first year is required at the end of the first year
  • A final report highlighting the project’s results and summarizing the use of the funds in the second year is required at the end of the second year of the grant period
  • The recipient is required to respond to the Association’s request for information on their career progress following the active grant
  • Recipients are responsible for submitting their research findings for presentation at the Annual EHA Congress within two years following the ending of the grant period
  • Recipients are also strongly encouraged to submit a paper to Haematologica/The Hematology Journal; the official Journal of the Association
  • All scientific publications, oral presentations, press releases or other information emanating from the project financed by the Fellowships & Grants Program must include the following statement: “This research was funded partly by the Grant (number or code) awarded by the European Hematology Association”.
