ESH-EHA Hematology Tutorials
ESH and EHA join forces to organize Hematology Tutorials under the guidance of EHATol Unit Chair, Professor Gina Zini (Rome).
Hematology Tutorials are annual courses aiming to provide laboratory and clinical hematologists with an integrated diagnostic and clinical work-up of hematological disorders. Initiated in 2004, with the support of the European Commission's Marie Curie Actions program, ESH-EHA Tutorials are based on technical and didactic innovation.
The scientific program takes the participants through the diagnostic and clinical pathway with plenary lectures, interactively conducted clinical case study sessions and self-assessment sessions. The faculty is available to provide individual guidance to the participants throughout the meeting. The scientific program is designed to encourage interaction between the faculty and the course participants. For technical reasons, attendance at each tutorial is limited to 100 participants.
Over the past four years, ESH-EHA Hematology Tutorials have become well-known in Europe. Several tutorials have also been jointly organized in Brazil, with the Brazilian School of Hematology. In future, the tutorials will continue to travel as invited by hematology organizations worldwide.
There are three types of Hematology Tutorials:
ESH-EHA Type I Hematology Tutorials present new lectures, new clinical cases and new self assessment tests developed by the Tutorials’ Faculty and Chairs.
ESH-EHA Type II Hematology Tutorials were developed as part of EHA’s outreach program. They use new lectures and the clinical cases and self-assessment test-cases previously presented at Type I Tutorials uploaded to the EHATol online platform. The Chair of EHATol Unit is responsible for selecting the cases and self-assessment case studies from the EHATol database according to the topics selected by the Chair(s).
Type II Tutorials are chaired (and the Faculty is composed) of local speakers with the support of at least 1 member of the EHATol Unit. The official language of Type II Tutorials is English. The courses last 2 or 3 days starting on Friday or Saturday and ending on Sunday. For each day, 3 session topics should be planned.
ESH-EHA Type III Hematology Tutorials
are, in essence, the same as the Type II. The only exception being that they are not financially supported by ESH-EHA. Financing of the ESH-EHA Type III Hematology Tutorial will be the responsibility of the local organizers. ESH and EHA provide the teaching materials (in English), equipment including the Voting Boxes System and full support in all organizational aspects and assistance on-site. The local organizer may choose the teaching language.
In the past two years this didactical model of courses has been successfully exported out of Europe and it will be exported in different European countries in the next years.
