Word of Welcome
On behalf of the European Hematology Association, we would very much like to invite you to the 17th Congress of EHA in Amsterdam, from June 14-17, 2012. This Congress marks EHA’s third return to the Dutch capital, having previously visited it in 1998 and 2006, and Amsterdam represents an excellent venue for the congress.
As EHA President and Chair of the Scientific Program Committee we would like to point out some of the special scientific features that this Congress offers and announce the call for abstracts.
Firstly, in the Plenary sessions we are fortunate to have an outstanding group of high profile speakers covering a range of exciting topics: Lou Staudt and Manuel Esteller will describe their studies of the molecular mechanisms underlying lymphoma and AML; Timm Schroeder will talk about the enormous power of single-cell imaging for characterizing normal and malignant hematopoiesis; Nancy Andrews will describe recent advances in our understanding of iron metabolism; and Katherine High will review the exciting current status of gene therapy for hemophilia.
The education program of EHA is as strong as ever and the Congress also includes Hematology-in-Focus, Meet-the-Expert sessions, Lunch Debates and the EHA Scientific Working Groups. Two more recent developments, the Laboratory Hematology Workshop and the Molecular Hemopoiesis Workshop have proved very popular and will continue at the 17th Congress. Lastly there will be two further innovations: a Saturday session specifically for hematology trainees and the incorporation into the Hematology-in-Focus program of two sessions organized by the EHA Scientific Working Groups.
The international collaborations of EHA are reflected in the joint symposia with the American Society of Hematology and the Japanese Society of Hematology. The European and patient perspectives are strengthened by symposia with the European Cancer Patient Coalition and the European School of Haematology, focusing on the patient's perspective and communication with patients.
Registration and abstract submission will be open from January 1, and we encourage the submission of abstracts to our program.
The oral presentations and poster sessions, compiled from the submitted abstracts, offer the opportunity for investigators, especially younger researchers, to present their work. A large number of travel grants will again be available for junior EHA members who have submitted an abstract.
