Job description

Haematology services in the Western Area of the HSE are delivered by 4 Consultant Haematologists based at University College Hospital Galway. Clinical services include a busy in-patient service (typically in excess of 20 in-patients), an active day ward service and weekly out patient clinics at UCHG and Mayo General Hospitals. All 4 Consultants are involved in the diagnosis and management of the full spectrum of both benign and malignant blood disorders.

In circumstances such as acute leukaemia and stem cell transplantation the Department operates as a tertiary centre for a wider catchment area, accepting referrals from outside the Western Area In addition to their clinical responsibilities, the Consultant Haematologists are responsible for the supervision of Haematology laboratory services in U.C.H.G. Consultants participate in the management of pathology services and are members of the Pathology Clinical Directorate.

There are blood transfusion laboratories in U.C.H.G, Roscommon, Ballinasloe and Castlebar. Active autologous transfusion in U.C.H.G. together with facilities for stem cell collection and processing and for radiation of blood products.
