European Hematology Curriculum

The task of the EHA Curriculum Committee is to develop recommendations for a harmonized basic curriculum for the specialist training of hematologists throughout Europe. The aim of the EHA Curriculum Committee is to contribute to the quality of training and patient care throughout Europe and to the professional status of European hematologists.

H-Net: the European Network for Harmonization of training in Hematology

This project was awarded a grant under the Leonardo da Vinci Lifelong Learning Programme by the European Commission. In a joint effort of 30 partners, H-Net aims to arrive at a truly harmonized curriculum for European hematologists, thus raising the competence levels of hematologists and, ultimately, improving patient care and public health.

H-Net builds on the previously developed Curriculum Passport. This is an itemized description of what constitutes a well-rounded hematological training as recommended by national and international societies and organizations of hematology (see below for more information). H-Net will first survey hematologists that have recently completed specialty training and compare their qualifications to those expressed in the Curriculum Passport. Next, on the basis of the needs that derive from analyses of the survey data, H-Net will implement existing, and develop novel educational tools to meet those needs. Moreover, an online portfolio system, not much unlike MySpace or LinkedIn, will be developed to allow individual hematologists to ascertain personal gaps in their training and recommend educational opportunities to fill them.

European Hematology Curriculum Passport

In 2005, a large number of national and international hematology organizations developed the European Hematology Curriculum Passport in the so-called ECAH project. The Passport is a booklet designed for hematologists in training and lists the areas within the specialty. Trainees can tick off these areas by indicating the level they mastered, ranging from awareness to competence. The trainee’s mentor confirms completion of each area with a signature. The Passport includes recommendations as to which degree each area should be mastered by at the end of specialty training. These recommendations were established by the ECAH partnership, which included most European national societies of hematology.

An update of the Passport is planned for 2010.
