Application Procedure
The Translational Research Training in Hematology program is geared toward medical (MD and/or PhD), biomedical (PhD) and pharmacy (PharmD) trainees and junior faculty in a hematology or hematology research-related field. Applicants generally must be within 12 years of MD graduation or have less than 8 years of post-doctoral experience at time of application. Applicants must be a member of either EHA or ASH.
There is no fee to apply to the program.
Please note: by applying to TRTH, you agree to commit to attending the initial week-long course, the first follow-up meeting at the EHA annual congress, and the second follow-up meeting at the ASH annual meeting.
Participants are also required to participate in post-TRTH surveys. Applications must be submitted electronically to training@ehaweb.org by October 1, 2010. Only electronic submissions will be accepted. Applications not formatted correctly or missing required documents will not be considered. Please see the list of required documents below. Applicants will be notified of their status by December 1, 2010.

The following documents must be submitted as one final document in a PDF file. Applicants must submit documents that they create as typed, with 1" margins in a minimum font size of 12 points. The name of the applicant must be in the lower right hand corner on each page of the document. All documents should be named in the following format: lastname_firstname_Institution.pdf.
- Research Proposal & References (5-page limit for proposal; 1-page limit for references). Please provide a description of the proposed project, as well as the specific aims of the project, plan of investigation, methods to be employed and any relevant references.
- Applicant’s Biosketch/CV (2-page limit). Please provide your complete contact information, present position, training (including training in clinical and/or translational research), publications, and other relevant information.
- Applicant’s Career Development Plan (2-page limit). Please detail your career goals (related to prior experience), systematic plan to obtain experience and skills for an independent career in translational research, and list of available resources (such as courses, workshops, etc) at your home institution.
To Be Submitted by the Mentor
The following documents must be created by the applicant’s mentor. Mentors must be a member of ASH or EHA. The same formatting rules required for the documents submitted by the applicant will apply for the documents submitted by the mentor.
- Mentor’s Biosketch/CV (2-page limit). Please provide complete contact information, present position, training (including training in clinical and or translational research), publications, and other relevant information.
- Mentor’s Statement of Support (2-page limit). Please include a letter of support from your mentor detailing his/her qualifications in your research area, previous experience in research training, nature and extent of supervision during the award year, and commitment to providing a productive environment for you to pursue your project.
APPLICATION EVALUATION PROCEDURE:
Applicants will be reviewed by a joint study section on the following criteria:
- Research Outline – 5 pages maximum + 1 page for references
- Research Question (importance, impact)
- Originality (aim, approach)
- Experimental plan (clarity, feasibility, regulatory affairs)
- Biostatistical paragraph
- Funding
- Applicant Curriculum Vitae – 2 pages
- Career Development Plan – 2 pages
- Excellence and experience of the host institution and mentor of the applicant (Must include mentor CV and information on other people that the mentor has trained) – 2 pages
- Demonstrated English skills
